MANILA – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed local government units (LGUs) in Albay to immediately evacuate residents within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around Mayon Volcano, following heightened unrest and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) maintaining Alert Level 2 as of January 7, 2026.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla emphasized proactive measures: “We cannot wait for a major eruption—safety of our people is paramount. LGUs must enforce evacuation and ensure no unauthorized entry.” The directive targets vulnerable barangays in municipalities like Guinobatan, Camalig, Daraga, and Legazpi City, where recent rockfalls and tremors have intensified.
PHIVOLCS recorded over 600 volcanic quakes in recent weeks, with continuous tremor and moderate SO2 emissions signaling possible magma movement. While no eruption is imminent, hazards like sudden phreatic explosions, rockfalls, and pyroclastic flows remain high.
Albay Governor Edcel Greco Lagman assured compliance, with preemptive evacuations already underway in high-risk areas (e.g., four families from Muladbucad Grande earlier). Relief operations and temporary shelters are prepared.
Residents are urged to cooperate—life and safety first.
