Health Secretary Ted Herbosa announced plans to declare a dengue outbreak as cases in the Philippines have reached critical levels. According to the Department of Health (DOH), dengue cases have surged by 33% compared to last year, with 136,161 cases recorded as of August 3, 2024, up from 102,374 the previous year. Although the number of dengue-related deaths has slightly decreased, from 401 last year to 364 this year, the situation remains concerning.
Several regions outside Metro Manila, such as Ormoc City and Iloilo, have already declared states of calamity due to the rise in dengue cases. In response, Manila City will conduct misting and spraying activities in public schools from August 19 to September 20, 2024.
The DOH continues to urge the public to follow the 4S strategy: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, Secure self-protection, Seek early consultation, and Support fogging in hotspot areas.
