MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the nation on Thursday, January 22, 2026, to quell rumors regarding his health following a brief hospitalization for an intestinal ailment.

The 68-year-old President confirmed he was diagnosed with diverticulitis—an inflammation of small pockets in the colon—which he described as a “common complaint” for people who are under heavy stress or “growing old.”

“Highly Exaggerated” In a video statement recorded from Malacañang, the President appeared in good spirits, humorously referencing Mark Twain to dismiss rumors of his passing. “Don’t worry. The rumors of my death are highly exaggerated,” he said.

Directing his message at political opponents, Marcos added, “Don’t get too excited just yet because it’s not a life-threatening condition.” He assured the public that the “problem was fixed” and that he is currently feeling far better than when he was admitted on Wednesday evening.

Adjusted Schedule While the Palace describes his condition as “stable,” the President has been advised to rest.

  • Missed Events: He was unable to attend the awarding ceremony for The Outstanding Young Men 2025 on Thursday morning, with Executive Secretary Ralph Recto standing in on his behalf.
  • Cancellations: A scheduled visit to his home province of Ilocos Norte on Friday, January 23, has also been canceled to allow for full recovery.

Health Context The President’s health is a frequent subject of public interest, particularly given his history as a kidney donor to his late father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., in the 1980s. Palace officials have previously used his status as a successful donor to refute allegations of past drug use, noting that he would not have been medically cleared for the procedure had he not been in peak health.

As of Friday morning, Malacañang maintains that the President remains in command and will resume his full slate of duties following a short period of recuperation.
