The EDSA Busway will not be removed, but rather improved through privatization, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista confirmed on Friday.

Addressing concerns over its possible removal, Bautista emphasized that the government has no plans to scrap the dedicated bus lane, which has been described as one of the most efficient public road transport systems in Metro Manila. Instead, the administration aims to hand over its operations to the private sector to enhance commuter experience.

“Yes, hindi tatanggalin ang EDSA Busway. Nagkaroon lang ng discussion diyan pero hindi siya tatanggalin,” Bautista said in a radio interview.

His remarks came after MMDA Chairman Romando Artes suggested that the Busway could eventually be phased out once MRT-3’s capacity is increased. However, Bautista reassured commuters that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. himself has stressed the need for an efficient public transport system.

Why the EDSA Busway Will Stay

Bautista clarified that the Busway is not a duplicate of the MRT-3, as it serves passengers from Caloocan to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), whereas MRT-3 only operates between North Avenue (Quezon City) and Taft Avenue (Pasay City).

To further improve transport services, the Busway now accommodates point-to-point (P2P) buses and airport express buses to help ease congestion.

Privatization Plans Underway

A feasibility study for the privatization of the EDSA Busway’s operations and management is set to be completed in the next few months. The target date for awarding the contract is by the end of 2026.

“Gusto sana natin na yung EDSA Busway conforms to international standards para sa comfort at convenience ng ating mga pasahero,” Bautista added.

With improvements on the way, the EDSA Busway remains a vital transport option for Metro Manila commuters!
