Many consider Elon Musk the real-life Tony Stark, the billionaire genius from Marvel’s Iron Man films. Recently, the Tesla CEO’s message on X has sparked speculation that he might turn fiction into reality.
On July 14, 2024, Musk, known as the “Dogefather,” tweeted, “Maybe it’s time to build that flying metal suit of armor.”
This bold statement came just a day after an attempted assassination on former US President Donald Trump, leading to mixed reactions online. Some mocked Musk’s idea, while others saw potential, likening it to Tony Stark’s transformation into Iron Man.
Real-Life Iron Man Suit: Is It Possible?
Musk’s quote draws parallels to a line from “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” where Tony Stark says, “I see a suit of armor around the world,” referring to his Iron Legion, a fleet of autonomous Iron Man suits designed to protect Earth from otherworldly threats.
Similarly, Musk, a known supporter of Trump, mused about creating a “flying suit of armor.” While many dismissed the idea as absurd, advancements in technology suggest it might not be so far-fetched.
Technological Progress Towards a Flying Suit
For instance, the British Royal Navy has demonstrated its Jet Suit, equipped with arm-mounted thrusters allowing users to fly over water and land on ships, reminiscent of Iron Man’s capabilities.
In 2023, Japanese company Tsubame introduced Archax, a 15-foot-tall robot with articulated hands capable of complex tasks. Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Tokyo developed Jizai Arms, cybernetic limbs that precisely replicate human movements.
Combining these innovations could pave the way for developing Musk’s envisioned flying suit of armor. However, realizing such a sophisticated machine would undoubtedly require extensive research and development over many years.
