Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong has pledged that the Marawi siege will not recur, emphasizing the government’s proactive measures against the Maute group remnants. This assurance came in the wake of a recent clash in Lanao del Norte’s Munai town, where six Scout Rangers and three members of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-MG) were killed. Adiong highlighted the crucial role of local government units (LGUs) in supporting law enforcement and military efforts to track down and neutralize the terrorists.

The engagement and cooperation between security forces and LGUs, down to the barangay level, are seen as vital for maintaining peace and preventing the resurgence of such threats. The commitment to robust intelligence gathering and military operations against the remnants of the Maute group, an organization that subscribes to the imported ideology of ISIS, underscores the government’s dedication to safeguarding Mindanao’s peace and stability.

Despite the violent history and the siege that left Marawi City in ruins, causing widespread displacement and humanitarian crises, Adiong remains optimistic. The government’s ongoing efforts to combat the DI-MG and its commitment to the region’s security aim to ensure that the horrors of the 2017 siege do not repeat, fostering a sense of safety and peace for the residents of Mindanao.
