The situation in Gaza has escalated significantly, with Israeli forces intensifying their campaign against Hamas militants. Fierce tank fire and aerial bombings by Israeli forces have been concentrated in Khan Younis, a region in the Gaza Strip. The conflict has led to nearly 200 deaths in 24 hours, according to recent reports. The offensive includes targeting Hamas command centers and arms depots, and a tunnel complex in Gaza City used by Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was also destroyed.

In the twelve weeks following Hamas militants’ attacks on Israeli towns, where 1,200 people were killed and 240 hostages taken, the Israeli military’s actions have devastated much of the Gaza Strip. The aim is to eradicate the Islamist militants, resulting in significant civilian displacement and casualties.

Gaza’s health authorities reported an additional 187 Palestinian deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 21,507, which is about 1% of the region’s population. Moreover, the conflict has taken a heavy toll on journalists, with the Committee to Protect Journalists noting this period as the deadliest recorded for journalists in a single year at one location.

Despite international concerns and calls from the US for Israel to scale down the war and focus on targeted operations against Hamas leaders, there appears to be no indication of a change in Israel’s approach. In a gesture of humanitarian aid, Israel facilitated the entry of vaccine doses into Gaza, coordinating with UNICEF to prevent the spread of diseases in the enclave. However, the overall situation remains tense and fraught with humanitarian challenges.
