After years of waiting, families of victims killed in former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs are hopeful that justice will finally be served as the International Criminal Court (ICC) begins its proceedings against him for crimes against humanity.
Jane Lee and Christina Pascual, who both lost loved ones in the drug war, expressed their desire for a swift trial and ruling from the ICC.
“What I really hope is that he will be detained while being investigated until he is proven guilty. That is exactly what the victims’ families are hoping for,” Lee told GMA News Online.
Ready to Testify
Both Lee and Pascual stated that if summoned by the ICC, they are willing to testify against Duterte.
🔹 “If I’m needed there, why not? I’m willing to go,” Pascual said.
🔹 Lee, who leads the group Rise Up for Life and for Rights, shared that families of victims are prepared to stand as witnesses.
A Long-Awaited Moment
Pascual recalled the surreal moment when she heard about Duterte’s arrest while at work.
🔹 “At first, I didn’t believe it. But after seeing the news, I was really happy,” she said.
🔹 Lee described the arrest as “a victory” for the victims’ families, adding that they were relieved when Duterte was taken to The Hague.
Seeking Justice Amid Fear
Despite their joy, the families acknowledge the fear many others still feel about coming forward.
🔹 “They should not be afraid because they will only tell the truth,” Lee said, urging other families to speak up.
