Geo Chiu is set to reconnect with his former Ateneo de Manila University teammates as he joins Strong Group Athletics for the 43rd William Jones Cup, scheduled from July 13 to 21 in Taiwan.
Familiar Faces
Chiu, currently playing for the Taiwan Mustangs, will reunite with ex-Ateneo teammates Angelo Kouame and Dave Ildefonso, who are now with UB Chartres Métropole and Suwon KT, respectively. Jacob Lao, also a former teammate, now serves as the SGA president.
“Of course, I’m extremely happy. I treat them as my kuyas, and I’m glad to have the chance to be teammates with them again,” Chiu said. “Ever since Ateneo, they’ve been mentoring me on and off the court. Now that they have experience playing professionally, I’m sure I will learn a lot from them. Just being able to share the court with them already makes me very happy. That’s an opportunity that doesn’t come around often, so I’ll make sure to make the most of it.”
Strengthening the Squad
The 6-foot-10 Chiu will bolster Strong Group’s frontcourt, joining forces with Chris McCullough, Caelan Tiongson, Tajuan Agee, and Allen Liwag. The roster also features notable players such as Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando, Jordan Heading, RJ Abarrientos, DJ Fenner, Jonathan Manalili, and Tony Ynot.
Chiu’s addition follows the announcement of Rhenz Abando joining Strong Group, further strengthening the team. Coach Charles Tiu and the squad aim to build on their experiences from previous tournaments, including a memorable run in Dubai.
Looking Ahead
As the team gears up for the William Jones Cup, Chiu’s reunion with his former teammates and the addition of experienced players promise an exciting campaign for Strong Group Athletics.
