Despite their road to the Paris Olympics coming to an end, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone is optimistic about the team’s future, emphasizing the need to move forward and improve.
Reflecting on the Journey
Gilas Pilipinas concluded their historic run in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament with a 71-60 loss to Brazil in the semifinals. Coach Cone reflected on the unique aspects of this program, which differed from the World Cup team, with hopes of keeping the core players together for the next three to four years leading into the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar.
Growth and Learning
“It’s hard to talk about this after you lose, but it’s a growth experience for us,” Cone said. “It’s kinda like a ‘now we know’ moment. Now we know we can compete, how can we get that next step in which we can get a little better, not just compete but win?”
Team Composition and Future Plans
Tim Cone, who took charge of the program earlier this year, selected a mix of young talents like Kai Sotto, Kevin Quiambao, and Carl Tamayo, alongside veterans such as June Mar Fajardo, Scottie Thompson, and Dwight Ramos. Naturalized player Justin Brownlee was also a key addition. Cone highlighted the importance of pushing forward and avoiding complacency despite the team’s commendable performance.
Looking Ahead
While the players will return to their professional clubs or school teams, Gilas Pilipinas will resume action in November during the second window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
Historic Wins and Future Goals
Gilas Pilipinas opened the tournament with a remarkable upset against Latvia, marking their first win against a European team in a FIBA competition in 64 years, before facing back-to-back losses to Georgia and Brazil.
Coach Cone remains focused on the long-term goal: “We need to keep pushing, moving forward, getting better.”
