For years, humans have envisioned robots taking over tedious and repetitive tasks. However, a startling incident in South Korea suggests that even machines might experience overburdening, as the country records the world’s first “robot suicide.”
An administrative officer from the Gumi City Council discovered the mechanical worker unresponsive after it had apparently thrown itself down a flight of stairs, according to CNBC.
Unusual Behavior Before the Incident
Witnesses reported seeing the robot “circling in one spot as if something was there” before it fell. Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the cause.
Possible Causes: Exhaustion or Malfunction?
The robot was manufactured by Bear Robotics, a California-based startup, and had been contributing to South Korea’s ambitious automation goals since August 2023, assisting with tasks like document deliveries, city promotion, and disseminating information.
On June 27, 2024, at around 4:00 PM, workers found the robot broken in the stairwell between the first and second floors of the council building. Eyewitnesses reported the robot behaving unusually before the incident.
Speculations and Reactions
Local media and netizens have been speculating about the cause. Some wonder if the workload was too much for the machine, while others believe a navigational error, programming bug, or sensor failure might be to blame.
South Korea is the most automated country in the world, with 1,012 robots per 10,000 employees, according to the International Federation of Robotics.
