Several countries have voiced serious concerns following an incident where a Chinese Coast Guard vessel fired a water cannon and sideswiped a Philippine ship near Sandy Cay in the West Philippine Sea.
The Philippines was backed by global allies including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the Netherlands. These nations condemned China’s actions as dangerous and destabilizing, warning they could escalate tensions in the region.
US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson described the event as a threat to regional stability, while British Ambassador Laure Beaufils stressed the importance of adhering to international law and the 2016 Arbitral Award, which invalidated China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea.
European, Japanese, and Taiwanese officials echoed these sentiments, urging all parties to seek peaceful solutions and uphold maritime law. Australian and New Zealand representatives labeled the incident as troubling, highlighting risks to safety and stability. Canada and the Netherlands also decried China’s coercive tactics, reaffirming support for freedom of navigation.
The Chinese Coast Guard claims it was reacting to what it called an illegal intrusion by Philippine vessels near Subi Reef and Sandy Cay. They argued the Philippine ship initiated the collision—an assertion the Philippines strongly disputes.
The contested waters, rich in resources and vital to global trade, remain a flashpoint in the region. Despite a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration favoring the Philippines, China continues to assert its expansive territorial claims.
