To immerse himself in the role of Aang for the Netflix adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Filipino-Canadian actor Gordon Cormier dedicated himself to watching the original animated series an impressive 35 times. This rigorous preparation came for a role in a series that premiered on Nickelodeon nearly two decades ago, a time before Cormier was even born.
At only 15 years old, Cormier experienced a whirlwind of emotions upon learning he had secured the role, describing the moment as filled with “tears, crying, and happiness.” The Netflix team’s search for the perfect Aang ended close to home, finding Cormier just 15 miles from the studio, a detail that added an element of destiny to his casting.
Cormier’s preparation for embodying Aang went beyond merely understanding the character; it was about connecting with the essence of the Avatar world. His dedication to watching the series 35 times speaks volumes about his commitment to bringing authenticity and depth to his portrayal.
His connection to the role and the series was further highlighted by his expressed joy of being back in the Philippines, his homeland, emphasizing the personal significance of this journey.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender,” a cherished Nickelodeon cartoon that originally aired from 2005 to 2008, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Cormier, along with cast members Kiawentiio as Katara, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, and Ian Ousley as Sokka, brings this beloved world to life in the Netflix series, premiering on February 22.
