Hundreds of food delivery riders in Quezon City, supported by the National Union of Food Delivery Riders, rallied against Grab’s new fare matrix, citing it as an unfair practice that significantly slashes their earnings. This unity ride aimed to protest the changes that have adversely impacted the income of delivery riders.
The riders are demanding the reinstatement of their colleagues who were allegedly suspended or terminated by Grab for their involvement in similar protests. This issue highlights concerns about the treatment of grievances by the company’s management.
The new fare policy introduced by Grab has reduced the rate per order from P45 to P35 and lowered the per kilometer compensation from P10 to P7, leading to a notable decrease in riders’ earnings. This reduction has sparked significant worry among the riders and attracted the attention of Philippine government authorities, including Congress and the Senate.
Senator Risa Hontiveros has voiced support for the riders, emphasizing that customer benefits should not come at the expense of the platform’s workers. The issue of alleged illegal termination of riders by Grab’s management is under investigation by the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC), with the riders’ group seeking assistance from the NLRC to address their concerns and seek justice.
