In a recent NBA game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs, Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich unexpectedly intervened when the crowd began booing Kawhi Leonard, a forward for the Clippers. Popovich took to the microphone at the Frost Bank Center, urging the fans to stop their negative reaction. His action, initially perceived as a defense of his former player, was later clarified by Popovich as a caution to the fans not to “poke the bear”.

This intervention might have been strategic, as Leonard, unfazed by the boos, scored a game-high 26 points, leading the Clippers to a 109-102 victory over the Spurs. Despite Popovich’s request, the crowd continued to boo Leonard each time he touched the ball.

Leonard, who began his NBA career with the Spurs and was instrumental in their 2014 NBA Championship victory, didn’t realize during the game that it was Popovich speaking on the mic. Reflecting on the incident, Leonard acknowledged the class of the Spurs organization, suggesting that Popovich’s action was in line with maintaining the organization’s respectful reputation.

The tension between Leonard and the Spurs fans likely stems from his request to be traded from the team in 2018, leading to his move to the Toronto Raptors, where he won a second NBA title in 2019. Since his departure from the Spurs, Leonard has maintained an impressive record against his former team, improving to 11-3 against the Spurs since the trade
