The Philippine Cancer Center (PCC), a beacon of hope for cancer patients across the nation, officially commenced construction with a groundbreaking ceremony in Quezon City. The event, graced by Speaker Martin Romualdez, Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan, and other dignitaries, marks a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare landscape.
Set to rise on a 5,000-square meter plot within the Blood Bank Complex, the 20-story PCC will epitomize a comprehensive approach to cancer care, integrating diagnosis, treatment, research, and support services under one roof. Each floor is dedicated to a specific cancer sub-specialty, catering to a wide array of cancers including hepatic, renal, gastrointestinal, and more, ensuring specialized care for each patient.
Beyond its clinical services, the PCC is envisioned as a center for education and training for medical professionals, particularly those serving remote areas. It will also provide accommodations for both doctors and the families of patients, emphasizing the center’s holistic approach to care and support.
Speaker Romualdez highlighted the commitment of the House of Representatives in allocating resources for state-of-the-art facilities and equipment at the PCC, such as LINAC, PET scans, and CyberKnife, among others. These investments aim to make cancer treatment more equitable, affordable, and accessible, transforming cancer from a feared death sentence into a manageable condition.
The initiative aligns with the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (Republic Act 11215), signed into law by former President Rodrigo Duterte in 2019, demonstrating the government’s resolve to enhance cancer care and control in the Philippines. Under the Department of Health’s oversight, the PCC will be steered by an executive director, ensuring leadership and direction in its mission to save lives and improve the quality of cancer care.
The Philippine Cancer Center stands as a testament to the country’s dedication to battling cancer, offering hope and tangible support to patients and their families, and paving the way for advancements in cancer treatment and research.
