A workers’ group is calling on former vice president Leni Robredo to reconsider her decision not to run for a national post in the 2025 elections.
Calls for Reconsideration
The Federation of Free Workers (FFW) Women’s Network (FWN) has urged Robredo to rethink her stance, highlighting her importance during challenging times. “Leni needs to reconsider her decision. The nation needs her in this challenging time. She is the beacon of hope for the opposition and the people in the periphery,” said FFW’s Ma. Victoria Bellosillo.
Robredo’s Firm Stance
Robredo recently stated her decision against running for a senatorial seat in 2025. “Sinarado ko na … kaya nagpaalam na ako sa LP (Liberal Party)…kaya ako nagpaalam sa LP na hindi na ako tatakbo sa Senado,” she said, expressing her preference to run for Naga City mayor instead.
FWN’s Argument for National Leadership
Despite Robredo’s firm stance, the FFW continues to push for her leadership on the national stage. “Baka naman pwede pa buksan ang pinto para sa Senado. May liderato siya at integridad na kinakailangan ng bansa,” said FWN vice president Arta Maines, emphasizing that Robredo could ignite the imagination of the people and drive positive change.
Liberal Party’s Support
The Liberal Party (LP) has expressed respect for Robredo’s decision, stating, “Hangad namin ang kanyang tagumpay at pamamayagpag, anuman ang tahakin niyang direksiyon. Lagi namin siyang titingalain.” They reiterated their support and best wishes for her future endeavors.
Robredo’s Political Background
Before serving as the 14th vice president of the Philippines, Robredo was the 3rd district representative of Camarines Sur from 2013 to 2016. She ran for president in the 2022 elections but lost to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., finishing with over 14 million votes compared to Marcos’ 31 million.
