Miss World Philippines Gwendolyne Fourniol is making significant strides in the 71st Miss World competition currently unfolding in India. The French-Filipino beauty, hailing from Himamaylan, Negros Occidental, has successfully qualified for another “fast-track” event, this time securing her place in the “Top Model” competition. This achievement follows her earlier successes in the “Head-to-Head,” “Sports,” and “Talent” events, showcasing her diverse talents and strong representation for the Philippines.
Fast-track winners are assured a spot in the quarterfinals, elevating their chances in the final competition. The “Top Model” fast-track event was won by Axelle Rene from Martinique, with Nursena Say from Turkey leading in the Asia-Pacific region. Fourniol’s consistent performance across multiple categories highlights her as a formidable contender in the pageant.
The journey to the Miss World stage has been a long wait for Fourniol, who was crowned Miss World Philippines in 2022 on her second attempt. The international pageant’s 71st edition experienced multiple delays, initially set for the same year but postponed due to the pandemic. The reigning Miss World, Karolina Bielawska from Poland, won during the 70th edition, which faced its own set of challenges, including a COVID-19 outbreak that disrupted the event.
The 71st Miss World pageant’s venue also saw several changes, initially announced to be in London, then the United Arab Emirates, before finally being held in India. Fourniol, representing the Philippines, aims to become the second Filipino to win the Miss World crown, following Megan Young’s victory in 2013 in Indonesia.
The Miss World Organization rescheduled the competition to the first quarter of 2024, allowing Fourniol to embark on her journey in mid-February. Competing against 111 delegates from around the globe, Fourniol’s participation is keenly watched by supporters, hoping for her success in the prestigious pageant.
The coronation event is set to take place at the Jio World Convention Center in Mumbai, India, on March 9, where Fourniol will vie for the coveted title and seek to bring pride to the Philippines once again.
