LUCENA CITY, Philippines — Parts of the Calabarzon region are bracing for sweltering temperatures as PAGASA warns of “danger-level” heat index values in Cavite and Batangas this Sunday and Monday, April 26 and 27, 2026.
According to the state weather bureau’s latest monitoring, certain stations are expected to hit the 40°C mark and above, posing significant health risks for residents.
- Sangley Point, Cavite City: Forecast to reach a high of 43°C on both Sunday and Monday. This falls squarely within the “Danger” category.
- Tanauan City (Barangay Ambulong), Batangas: Expected to record a heat index of 41°C on Sunday and 40°C on Monday, classified under “Extreme Caution.”
PAGASA classifies heat index values (the “apparent temperature” felt by the body) into several risk levels:
- Danger (42°C to 51°C): Prolonged exposure and activity can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and a high risk of heat stroke.
- Extreme Caution (33°C to 41°C): Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible; continuing physical activity could lead to heat stroke.
Health authorities and local government units (LGUs) are urging the public to take immediate precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Limit Outdoor Exposure: Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the peak heat hours between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing.
- Vulnerable Groups: Check frequently on children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, as they are at higher risk.
- Reduce Activity: Limit strenuous physical activities or move them to the cooler parts of the early morning or late evening.
The high heat index in these provinces is part of a broader trend of intense summer heat across Luzon. While some areas might experience isolated rain showers due to the easterlies, the humidity associated with these rains often contributes to a higher perceived temperature, making the “danger” level more prevalent in coastal and low-lying areas like Sangley Point.
