In a twist of fate, a man’s decision to ride a motorcycle without a helmet in Manila led to his arrest, revealing his involvement in a series of robberies across the city. Ian Christopher Lapuz was apprehended at a checkpoint manned by the Manila Police District Station 9 (Malate Police Station), marking a significant breakthrough in the police’s efforts to clamp down on crime.
Upon his arrest, authorities discovered a caliber .45 handgun with ammunition and the motorcycle used by Lapuz and his accomplices in their criminal activities. “We reviewed CCTV recordings. He was the rider on one of the motorcycles, and we have also identified his companions,” stated MPD director Police Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay.
Lapuz was identified as part of a six-member gang operating on three motorcycles, captured on camera last month targeting a man who had just withdrawn money from an ATM in Manila. The suspect admitted to his crimes, justifying his actions by stating the need for money due to his wife’s pregnancy.
According to Lapuz, their victims were chosen opportunistically, including individuals withdrawing money from ATMs. The police are actively searching for the remaining members of the gang, aiming to put an end to their operations and restore safety to the streets of Manila.
