In a significant shift, this year’s Balikatan Exercises between Filipino and American forces mark the beginning of greater international cooperation, with former observers now stepping into active roles.

British Ambassador to the Philippines, Laure Beaufils, announced that the UK will officially participate in the joint drills, deploying nine British commandos — a first for the country. She emphasized the UK’s growing commitment to supporting the Philippine military.

Japan and Australia have also been invited to take part in the 2025 Balikatan, which runs through May 9.

Meanwhile, the UK’s expanded involvement in the Indo-Pacific includes the deployment of the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales and its accompanying Carrier Strike Group. The vessel, which left Portsmouth just a day ago, heads an eight-month mission involving warships, support vessels, aircraft, and around 4,000 British troops.

British Defense Attaché Group Captain Bea Walcot reassured that despite the absence of a Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the Philippines, defense ties remain strong. The UK’s long-term maritime presence in the Indo-Pacific — maintained by two vessels — reflects its commitment to regional security.

The UK has also spoken out against aggressive actions by Chinese Coast Guards in the West Philippine Sea, aligning itself with Philippine maritime rights.

At the recent Media Reception 2025, Ambassador Beaufils further emphasized the UK’s dedication to press freedom and its broader support for Philippine development — including economic growth, environmental protection, and climate resilience — as part of a well-rounded partnership strategy.
