QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) has issued a strongly worded statement calling on the government for a resolution to the ongoing “flood control scam” probe, expressing frustration over the perceived lack of progress and accountability.
Key Demands for Accountability:
In a statement aired on the group’s official network, Net25, INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala questioned the government’s inaction regarding an exposé by 18 individuals.
- The Allegation: The 18 individuals—described as “bagmen”—claim to have delivered suitcases containing a staggering ₱805 billion in kickbacks to President Marcos and various lawmakers.
- The Delay: Zabala noted that more than three months have passed since the INC held a major two-day rally in November to demand transparency, yet the nation has seen no clear steps toward holding a “mastermind” accountable.
- Diversion Tactics: The spokesperson lamented that investigators seem to be focusing on side issues rather than the core corruption scandal, even suggesting that authorities are targeting whistleblowers instead of the perpetrators.
Senate Probe Status:
The investigation is currently being led by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, chaired by Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson.
- Lacson’s Stance: Last month, Lacson assured the public that the committee would “go where the evidence leads,” emphasizing that the probe must be fair and not used to protect or unfairly target any senator or official.
- The Evidence: Zabala specifically cited a joint affidavit executed by the 18 alleged bagmen as sufficient evidence to warrant more aggressive action. “What evidence are they waiting for to go after the mastermind of this anomaly?” he asked.
Public Sentiment:
The INC emphasized that it is not just its members but “millions of Filipinos across the world and the international media” who are closely monitoring the developments. The religious group reiterated its call for the truth to be revealed to restore the public’s trust in the government.
