Over the past decade, the Iloilo River in the Philippines has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a polluted waterway to a stunning public space known as the Iloilo River Esplanade. This 10-kilometer walkable esplanade is the result of a successful flood control project initiated in 2008, which not only enhanced the river’s aesthetics but also addressed accessibility issues.
Under the leadership of Engr. Noel Hechanova, former CENRO head of Iloilo City, what started as a functional flood control initiative blossomed into a vibrant linear park. This development has significantly improved the quality of life for Ilonggos, offering them a dedicated space for various activities, including walking and cycling. The project’s impact extended beyond recreational benefits, inspiring further environmental efforts like the restoration of the Iloilo River and mangrove conservation.
In recognition of its contribution to ecological sustainability and urban livability, the Iloilo River Esplanade was honored with prestigious awards. In 2018, it received the Galing Pook Award for its advocacy in sustainable urban development and the Haligi ng Dangal award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for its exceptional landscape architecture. These accolades underscore the project’s success in blending functionality with aesthetic appeal and its role in fostering a deeper connection between the community and their natural environment.
