India is on the brink of delivering BrahMos cruise missiles to the Philippines, marking a significant advancement in the defense relations between the two nations. This move comes as a fulfillment of the purchase agreement inked in 2022, as confirmed by the South Asian country’s envoy.

Ambassador Shambhu Kumaran, representing India in the Philippines, conveyed the commitment to expedite the delivery process. Although a precise timeline remains unspecified, the ambassador assured that the arrival of the BrahMos missiles is imminent. This development was spotlighted in a report by JP Soriano on ’24 Oras Weekend’ aired on Saturday.

The historical contract, valued at P18.9 billion, was secured under the administration of former Philippine President Duterte, through then-Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana. The agreement focuses on the procurement of a shore-based anti-ship missile system, specifically designed to bolster the nation’s defense capabilities. Lorenzana, at the time of signing, emphasized the strategic importance of the BrahMos missiles in safeguarding Philippine sovereignty, especially concerning the contentious West Philippine Sea.

In a recent speech commemorating India’s Republic Day, Ambassador Kumaran reaffirmed India’s solidarity with the Philippines, especially regarding the West Philippine Sea issue. He articulated India’s unwavering stance against coercion and intimidation, emphasizing the shared goal of ensuring a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region. The ambassador also highlighted the deployment of INS Kadmatt, an anti-submarine warfare corvette of the Indian Navy, poised to enhance the maritime defense capacity of the Philippines.

Looking beyond defense, the collaboration between the two countries is expected to extend into domains such as economy, trade, investment, and culture. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo underscored the multifaceted nature of the bilateral relations, anticipating a future enriched by mutual cooperation and understanding.
