In an impressive display of resilience and skill, Jamie Malonzo propelled Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to victory against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters with a career-high 32 points during a recent PBA Philippine Cup game. This achievement comes at a time when Malonzo has been facing personal difficulties, which he alluded to as a ‘tough’ period in his life during the post-game conference.

Malonzo expressed his gratitude towards his teammates for their unwavering support, emphasizing how their solidarity helped him navigate through the challenges. “It’s been tough, going through a lot, [it] hasn’t been easy. It’s difficult to cancel out all the noise and go out there and perform and focus on the game. I was happy to do what I did tonight and move forward,” he stated, choosing not to delve into the specifics of his ordeal.

According to Tim Cone, Barangay Ginebra and Gilas Pilipinas head coach, Malonzo had been particularly affected during the Gilas Pilipinas game against Chinese Taipei in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers last February 25. Reports had surfaced about Malonzo’s involvement in a fight, which might have contributed to the emotional toll he mentioned.

Coach Cone praised Malonzo’s ability to find refuge and solace in the company of his teammates and the game itself, highlighting how returning to his ‘comfort zone’ has been crucial for his mental and emotional recovery. “He found a sanctuary in practice and games. He’s back to his comfort zone with his teammates. That’s the key issue for him and it showed tonight in his game and he can put everything behind and just move forward,” Cone reflected.

The game also saw the absence of Scottie Thompson from Barangay Ginebra’s lineup due to “back issues,” adding to the team’s challenges. Despite these obstacles, Malonzo’s standout performance and the collective effort of the team led to a significant win, underscoring the importance of unity and support in overcoming personal and professional hurdles.

Malonzo’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the role of a supportive community in facing adversity, setting an inspiring example for both his teammates and fans.
