The revered images of Jesus Nazareno and Nuestra Señora Del Carmen met during the traditional Dungaw on Thursday evening, January 9, 2025, as part of the celebrations for the Feast of Jesus Nazareno.
The meeting took place at Plaza del Carmen, outside the San Sebastian Church, at exactly 5:57 p.m., where the arrival of Jesus Nazareno was marked by the tolling of church bells and the crowd enthusiastically shouting “Viva!” with raised hands.
A brief prayer followed before the Virgin Mary was returned inside the church, and the Dungaw concluded after 15 minutes.
Significance of the Dungaw
The Dungaw, also known as La Mirata, is a cherished tradition during the procession of Jesus Nazareno. As explained by the San Sebastian Basilica Conservation and Development Foundation, Inc., this ritual symbolizes maternal love, offering devotees a moment for prayer and reflection. It portrays a poignant reunion between Jesus and His mother, encouraging contemplation on their spiritual journey together.
