The Philippines, Australia, Japan, and the United States are gearing up for a Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) in the West Philippine Sea on April 7, 2024. This initiative, conducted within the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ), aims to affirm the principles of freedom of navigation, overflight rights, and respect for maritime rights under international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
This collaborative maritime exercise will showcase the joint capabilities and commitment of these nations to bolster regional and international cooperation, ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The activity is designed to respect international and domestic laws, prioritizing navigational safety and acknowledging the maritime interests of other states.
In response to recent tensions, including aggressive maneuvers by the China Coast Guard in the region, this exercise underscores the collective resolve of the participating countries to uphold a rules-based international order conducive to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The exercise will feature naval and air force units, demonstrating professional interaction and operational interoperability among the allies, enhancing their collective defense and strategic partnership in maintaining regional security.
