LeBron James and his family remain in a hotel after evacuating their Brentwood home due to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the Los Angeles area for over a week.
The Los Angeles Lakers star expressed his hope of returning home soon following the team’s victory against the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The fires have also impacted others close to the Lakers organization, including coach JJ Redick, whose rental home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed.
“Our friends that lost their homes, just being there for them,” James shared after scoring 22 points in the Lakers’ 117-108 win. “It’s very challenging, especially with kids. Losing your home and their belongings is hard to process, but I’m thankful my family is safe.”
Wildfires’ Toll on Lives and Teams
The wildfires have claimed at least 25 lives, scorched over 60 square miles, and destroyed more than 12,000 structures, according to CBS News. Two Lakers home games were postponed last week due to the crisis, which James admitted has affected him deeply.
“Personally, I’ve been off,” said James, 40. “We’ve been evacuated since last Thursday night. It’s been tough, but we’re staying strong for each other, which is what matters most.”
Despite the challenges, James confirmed that his home is still safe.
Pro Sports Teams Unite for Relief
In response to the disaster, 12 professional sports teams across Los Angeles and Orange counties, including the Lakers, have pledged $8 million toward fire relief efforts.
The wildfires’ impact extends beyond the sports world, displacing thousands, including 150 Filipinos, as reported by local authorities.
