The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) is set to provide much-needed relief to commuters battling the intense Philippine summer heat. Starting May 4, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) will officially open dedicated passenger cooling rooms in every station along its line, stretching from Recto in Manila to Antipolo.

The initiative aims to safeguard the health and comfort of passengers, especially during the peak hours of the dry season when temperatures at train platforms can reach uncomfortable levels. These air-conditioned spaces are designed to offer a temporary refuge for commuters who may feel overwhelmed by the heat or exhibit signs of exhaustion while waiting for their rides.

According to the LRTA, the cooling rooms will be accessible to all passengers during the railway’s regular operating hours. Each facility is equipped with seating and proper ventilation to ensure a conducive environment for rest. The agency noted that this move is a proactive response to the rising heat index recorded in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces over the past few weeks.

In addition to the cooling rooms, the LRTA reminded the public to stay hydrated and to seek assistance from station personnel or medical teams stationed at the terminals if they feel unwell. Security guards and platform staff have also been briefed to monitor passengers for symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as dizziness or fainting.

The rollout across all stations follows a successful pilot of the concept and reflects the management’s commitment to improving the overall commuting experience. The LRT-2 system, which serves thousands of daily riders including many students and elderly citizens, remains a critical artery for East-West travel in the capital region.
