A coffee shop manager has been suspended following a viral video that captured a distressing incident involving a customer and a beggar. The video, taken by customer Gino Mariano, sparked widespread concern online.
Incident Details
In the “FYP” report, Gino Mariano described his experience. While in line to order, he was approached by a man asking for money. After Gino declined, the man began shouting and pushing him and his companion. Seeking help, Gino turned to the store’s barista, who was also the manager.
The video shows the manager yelling, “You want us to do your job?” instead of assisting. Gino recalled, “Ang ginawa niya, instead na tulungan kami, mas gumilid pa siya,” adding that the manager shouted at them to leave.
Customer Concerns
Gino expressed alarm over the lack of security, noting the absence of a guard during daylight. Despite the manager’s suspension, Gino remains concerned for his safety, fearing possible retaliation.
Legal Perspective
Atty. Leo Lalusis highlighted the relevance of the Civil Code’s Article 2180, paragraph 4, which holds owners and managers liable for their employees’ actions. He commented, “Nawalan ng maximum tolerance ‘yung manager eh. Kumbaga, it is incumbent upon him, as a manager, to pacify the situation.”
Starbucks’ Response
Starbucks Philippines issued an official statement acknowledging the incident and emphasizing their commitment to customer safety and security. They stated, “Ensuring that everyone feels safe, secure, and welcome in our stores is our top priority, and we will take all necessary measures to achieve this. This matter is being taken very seriously and is currently under investigation. We sincerely apologize for this experience and will follow up closely with those involved to provide support.”
