In a tense altercation on the streets of Ermita, Manila, a security incident escalated fatally when a security guard was forced to use his firearm against a man reportedly causing havoc. The incident, occurring at the intersection of Mabini and Pedro Gil, resulted in the death of the assailant, identified only by the alias Bogart, who was armed with a machete.
Eyewitness Felix Laurio recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, describing how Bogart had engaged in a violent confrontation, repeatedly striking the victim with the machete. Despite the victim’s attempts to flee, he was pursued and attacked, eventually collapsing from his injuries.
The guard, employed by a nearby hotel, intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Initially firing a warning shot, the situation took a dangerous turn when the assailant faced the guard, machete in hand, prompting the guard to shoot in self-defense, hitting the assailant in the chest and resulting in his immediate death.
Police Captain Dennis Turla, head of the Homicide Section of the Manila Police District (MPD), reported that the victim of the machete attack, Bogart, received first aid from the guard before being rushed to the hospital, where he is currently recovering.
The police have recovered two shell casings from the scene and are holding the guard for investigation, though he has yet to make a statement regarding the incident.
This event has sparked discussions on security measures and the use of lethal force in self-defense situations, highlighting the challenges faced by security personnel in high-stress situations.
