The Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced the removal of police security for “very important persons” (VIPs) under its new policy. PNP chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil disclosed this change in an interview with Dobol B TV, noting that the adjustment was made upon his assumption of leadership.

New Policy on Police Security

General Marbil emphasized that the PNP’s primary responsibility is to provide security to individuals whose lives are genuinely threatened, rather than offering VIP protection. “When I started as Chief PNP, we changed the terms on giving [Police Security and Protection Group] services because it appears they are moonlighting,” Marbil explained.

He clarified that it is not the police’s job to protect VIPs simply because of their status. “Our job is to give security to people who are threatened for their lives,” he added.

Focus on Real Threats

Marbil pointed out that the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG) should only serve individuals facing actual threats, not perceived ones. For example, the PNP will not provide security to wealthy individuals who believe their financial status makes them targets of violence.

“I’m not happy about it because last time I went to a hotel, this Chinese guy had security, but I didn’t. They were wearing a PSPG t-shirt. Worse, they were just carrying his bag,” Marbil said, highlighting the misuse of police resources.

Exceptions to the Rule

While the new policy restricts police security for VIPs, Marbil noted that the PNP can still provide security services to high government officials and individuals with legitimate threats to their lives.
