President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is reviewing newly refiled bills in Congress, specifically those pushing for divorce and banning political dynasties, according to Malacañang on Thursday.
During a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said the President has yet to take a formal position on the divorce bill, emphasizing the need to first examine its provisions.
“At present, the President has no definitive stance on the Divorce Bill. It’s important to study the content of the measure, especially since many of the reasons that justify legal separation are now being proposed as grounds for annulment,” Castro explained.
When asked if Marcos would back the divorce bill, Castro said the President’s support will depend on the quality of the provisions and whether religious institutions are aligned with the measure.
Meanwhile, Castro confirmed that Marcos will also evaluate the proposed Anti-Political Dynasty Act, recently filed by the Makabayan bloc. The bill aims to prevent family members from simultaneously holding or running for public office at both national and local levels.
“It would be better to first see the full details of the bill. Only then can the President assess its potential impact,” she said.
On the topic of regulating minors’ use of social media—through a bill proposed by Senator Panfilo Lacson—Castro added that the President supports initiatives that safeguard the mental health of the youth.
“If it’s proven that social media harms mental health, the President will likely support the measure, as long as it benefits the public and especially young people,” she said.
Lacson’s bill proposes age verification and other measures to restrict social media access for minors.
