Mariah Carey has revealed the heartbreaking news that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, both passed away on the same day over the weekend.
In an exclusive statement to People Magazine, the Grammy-winning artist expressed her sorrow: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend.” She further shared the tragic coincidence, stating, “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
The singer mentioned she felt fortunate to have spent the final week with her mother, cherishing those last moments. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” Mariah added.
Details surrounding the deaths of Patricia and Alison, including their causes, have not yet been released.
Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer. The couple had three children—Alison, Morgan, and Mariah—before their divorce when Mariah was just three years old. Alison lived with their father, while Morgan and Mariah stayed with Patricia, who was a significant influence on Mariah’s early music career. Despite a complicated relationship, Mariah and her mother maintained their bond and even performed together in 2010 for the special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You.”
Mariah Carey’s relationships with her siblings have also been complex, as detailed in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
