Actor and Philippine Army reservist Matteo Guidicelli is set to lead Philippine Defenders, a GMA Public Affairs documentary spotlighting the stories of Filipino soldiers—their sacrifices, motivations, and unwavering duty to the nation.
Speaking during a May 14 online media briefing, Guidicelli shared his deep connection to the project. “It’s been my dream to tell their stories since I joined the Reserve Force in 2019,” he said. “I may not be a full-fledged soldier, but I vowed to represent them and bring their realities to light.”
The documentary explores the personal and emotional journeys of those in uniform—what drives them to serve, the struggles they face, and the impact of their sacrifices on national security. Guidicelli emphasized the non-political nature of the series, stating it’s all about service and patriotism.
“This is purely for the Filipino people,” he added. “Their stories are incredibly moving. We often overlook how much they give up.”
Guidicelli also broadened the idea of a “defender,” saying that ordinary citizens play a role too. “We all have a part in protecting our country. Patriotism starts with us,” he said, urging Filipinos to lead by example in their everyday lives.
He revealed that filming involved risky military-style training, but said he thrives in such intense environments. “It puts life in my veins. I love it,” Guidicelli said, crediting his faith and family—especially wife Sarah Geronimo—for their support.
“God is always in control,” he concluded, expressing gratitude for the chance to honor the country’s real-life heroes through the documentary.
