Michelle Marquez Dee, the reigning Miss Universe Philippines, has been recognized with the prestigious Hans T. Sy Leadership Award for her advocacy in autism inclusion and welfare. This honor was presented at the pre-show of the “Angels Walk for Autism 2024,” an event organized by the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) and held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
During the ceremony, Dee expressed her deep connection to the cause, which is close to her heart, particularly because of her personal experiences with her siblings, Adam and Mazenne, who are on the autism spectrum. Her advocacy efforts have been longstanding, even before her tenure as Miss Universe Philippines, working alongside ASP, the largest nongovernment organization for autism in the world.
In her acceptance speech, Dee shared her emotions and gratitude, emphasizing the impact of her family and her community in guiding her advocacy journey. “Receiving this award really hits different because it is given by all of you who have been key to my success on this wonderful journey,” she said, visibly moved by the recognition.
The event also served as a platform to promote greater awareness and inclusion for individuals with autism, with thousands of supporters, including families and friends of those on the spectrum, participating in the walk. Dee, along with her family and ASP officers, led the walk through the Mall of Asia, aiming to engage the public and enhance community support for autism welfare.
Dee’s commitment to making a positive impact was clear as she spoke passionately about the collective effort needed to foster a more inclusive society. “Let’s make every small victory make the loudest and biggest waves all around the world. Because here we are making a society where everyone belongs,” she urged.
As Dee prepares to pass on her crown at the upcoming 2024 Miss Universe Philippines pageant, her advocacy work leaves a lasting legacy, demonstrating how beauty queens can leverage their platforms for meaningful social change.
