MANILA, Philippines — Former legislator and multi-industry leader Mikee Romero has been named “Man of the Year 2026” by Rising Tigers Magazine.
The honor, announced on Monday, February 16, 2026, recognizes Romero’s multifaceted contributions to the Philippines as an entrepreneur, financier, sportsman, and former lawmaker. The publication cited his “purposive way” of building systems and institutions as the primary reason for his selection.
Professional Lifetimes and Milestones
Romero’s career is defined by a series of diverse and successful professional chapters:
- Finance and Entrepreneurship: Before the age of 30, Romero earned his first P100 million while working in mergers and acquisitions in Singapore. He later applied these lessons to the unglamorous but critical port and logistics industries, building the country’s largest port operations for bulk and breakbulk cargo.
- Legislation and Public Service: During his nine-year tenure in Congress, which included serving as House Deputy Speaker, Romero authored or co-authored 145 laws. His legislative focus was on “governance by output,” targeting healthcare, education, and social protection.
- Poverty Alleviation: As chairman of the committee on poverty alleviation, he was a principal author of augmentations to the 4Ps program, viewing poverty as a system of crushing barriers that required urgent institutional solutions.
Sportsmanship and Polo
A former college basketball player whose career ended due to injury, Romero pivoted to polo, approaching it with the same methodical discipline he used in business. Today, he ranks among the world’s top amateur polo players and has earned medals in various international competitions.
Current Mission: The Reserve Force
Following his exit from Congress last year, Romero has shifted his focus to national service through the Philippine Reserve Force, where he now serves as a full colonel.
- National Readiness: Romero advocates for a paradigm shift in patriotism, focusing on capability in modern battlefields such as cyber defense, logistics, and disaster response.
- Quiet Service: He emphasizes that “quiet preparation saves more lives than speeches ever will,” preferring direct action and volunteerism over public spectacle.
In his interview with Rising Tigers, Romero stressed that mindset shapes outcomes, and he called for a change of paradigm in Filipino leadership—one measured by impact and the building of lasting institutions rather than applause or noise.
