LINZ, Austria — Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala opened her clay court season with a statement victory, defeating hometown favorite Julia Grabher in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the Round of 16 at the Linz Open.
The 20-year-old Eala displayed remarkable poise at Centre Court, fending off Austria’s top-ranked player and the local crowd’s energy to secure her place in the next round of the WTA 500 tournament.
The match began as a tactical battle, with both players trading service holds through the first nine games. Eala finally broke the deadlock in the 10th game, securing the only break of the opening set to take it 6-4.
Riding that momentum, Eala raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Although Grabher managed to break back once to make it 4-3, Eala immediately responded by breaking Grabher again and serving out the match with clinical precision.
“I think I kept the intensity well throughout the match. She’s a very intense player and has really good shots, so I’m really happy with the win,” Eala said during her post-match interview.
The victory was made even more special by the vocal support of the Filipino community in Linz. Fans draped in Philippine flags and holding handmade banners cheered Eala throughout the contest.
Addressing the crowd in Filipino, Eala expressed her surprise and gratitude: “I didn’t think there were so many of you here in Linz. Thank you for watching my matches, and let’s see each other tomorrow.”
The road to the quarterfinals will not be easy. Eala is set to face World No. 23 Jelena Ostapenko on Wednesday. While Ostapenko is a formidable former Grand Slam champion, Eala enters the match with a psychological edge, having defeated the Latvian star twice in their meetings last year.
As Eala continues to climb the WTA rankings, her performance in Linz serves as a promising start to her European swing, further establishing her as a rising threat on the clay court surface.
