Since Thai business mogul Anne Jakrajutatip acquired the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) in 2022, her tenure has been marked by a commitment to transforming the pageant into a platform for equality and inclusivity. Despite these noble intentions, Jakrajutatip’s leadership has been shadowed by several controversies that have stirred discussions among pageantry enthusiasts and raised questions about the organization’s direction.

One of the most contentious moments came shortly after the Miss Universe 2022 event, where allegations surfaced accusing Jakrajutatip of favoritism towards the winner, R’Bonney Gabriel of the USA. Critics pointed to potential biases, given Gabriel’s extended speaking time during the final question, the competition’s location in the United States, and a jury predominantly composed of Americans. Jakrajutatip vehemently denied these claims, asserting the fairness and integrity of the judging process.

Further complicating matters, JKN Global Group, owned by Jakrajutatip, faced financial difficulties, leading to a declaration of bankruptcy. The media group struggled with a liquidity problem, failing to meet repayment deadlines for bonds worth millions. Jakrajutatip reassured stakeholders of her commitment to resolving these issues and maintaining the Miss Universe Organization as her priority.

The “Voice for Change” video contest, introduced in Miss Universe 2023, also attracted criticism for the perceived discrepancy between the contest’s earnings and the charitable donation amount. Miss Universe 2015, Pia Wurtzbach, voiced concerns over the small percentage of proceeds allocated to the winners’ chosen charities, suggesting a more significant portion of the votes’ cost should benefit these causes.

Jakrajutatip’s public statements and actions have sometimes been at odds with the pageant community’s expectations. A viral video showed her addressing the dissatisfaction of fans with the Miss Universe 2023 results in a manner some considered dismissive. The incident prompted discussions on the respect owed to the pageant’s dedicated supporters.

Adding to the controversy, Jakrajutatip accused former MUO president Paula Shugart of corruption, leading to a heated exchange and legal threats. This accusation not only strained relations within the organization but also cast doubt on the integrity of previous competitions.

Perhaps the most significant challenge to Jakrajutatip’s vision of inclusivity emerged from an alleged leaked video. It suggested that the organization’s push for inclusivity, including allowing transgender women and divorced women to compete, was merely a “communication strategy” and not a genuine commitment to diversity. Jakrajutatip has since denounced the video as maliciously edited, asserting her dedication to inclusivity aligns with her personal beliefs and identity.

These controversies highlight the complexities of leading an iconic global institution like the Miss Universe Organization in an era that demands authenticity, transparency, and a genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion. As the MUO navigates these challenges, the global pageantry community watches closely, hopeful for a future that honors the pageant’s legacy while embracing progress and change.
