Many overseas Filipinos are flying their loved ones from the Philippines to the UAE, making this year particularly busy for the tourism sector.
“Super peak season,” said Malou Prado, CEO of a travel agency. “We have more than 1,000 applications this holiday season.”
Ellanie Villena, owner of another tour firm, noted the overwhelming demand. “The number of clients this season has tripled. We’ve received countless family and group bookings from Filipinos eager to reunite with their loved ones and explore the UAE.”
Streamlined Visa Processes
The ease of obtaining visit visas has been a significant factor in this trend. UAE visit visas are typically processed within 24 to 48 hours if all requirements are in order, including:
- Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC)
- Tenancy contract
- Bank statement
- UAE residence visa and national ID
- Visitor passports and travel itineraries
Memorable Reunions
Marlyn Flores Castro, an entrepreneur from Pampanga, sponsored 10 relatives for a holiday reunion in Dubai. “Celebrating Christmas with my family here brings so much joy, especially seeing my children with their cousins,” said Castro, who spent AED22,000 (around PHP 347,000) for airfare and visas.
For Kristine Joyce Ruelos, a businesswoman from Olongapo City, the holidays were a rare chance to gather her siblings from the US, Singapore, Japan, and the Philippines. “It feels good to have everyone here,” she shared.
Costs and Sacrifices
While heartwarming, these reunions often come at a significant cost. Janelli Valdezco-Cusi, a multimedia designer from Batangas, estimates spending at least AED10,000 (around PHP 158,000) for a four-month stay covering accommodation, food, and leisure.
Others, like Janina Aberin Gayem, adopt frugal habits throughout the year to afford these moments. “I don’t set a budget when they visit; I make up for it by saving the rest of the year,” said Gayem, who has been in Dubai since 2006.
