LIPA CITY, Batangas — Mount Maculot, one of Luzon’s most popular hiking destinations, has been temporarily closed to the public as authorities begin rehabilitation efforts and develop long‑term plans for sustainable tourism.

The closure, ordered by local government and environmental agencies, aims to address concerns over trail degradation, littering, and safety issues that have worsened with increasing visitor traffic. Officials said the shutdown will give the environment a chance to recover and allow planners to implement better systems for managing future foot traffic.

Mount Maculot’s trails, known for their scenic views and challenging terrain, attract hikers year‑round. But the site’s rising popularity has also brought problems such as soil erosion, unregulated campsites, and improper waste disposal — prompting calls from environmental groups and local stakeholders to take action.

Officials said they will use the closure period to rehabilitate damaged areas of the mountain and consult with tourism experts, mountaineering groups, and community leaders to develop a comprehensive tourism management plan. This plan is expected to include sustainable trail design, visitor caps, proper signage, and improved waste‑management systems to preserve the area’s natural beauty.

Local authorities stressed that the decision is not permanent and that Mount Maculot will reopen once rehabilitation work is complete and a plan is finalized. They also reiterated the importance of balancing outdoor recreation with environmental stewardship, noting that the site’s natural resources must be protected for future generations.

Community leaders and environmental advocates generally welcomed the move, saying the temporary closure could help restore the mountain’s ecosystems and set a precedent for sustainable tourism practices in other popular nature destinations.
