MANILA – The Manila Police District (MPD) has formed Special Investigation Task Group Ambon (SITG Ambon) to probe the death of Christian Tendido Ambon, a criminology graduate from Northern Samar who was mistaken for a thief, mobbed, and fatally stabbed in Malate, Manila.
According to the MPD, the incident occurred on February 8, 2025, at around 11 p.m. on Leveriza Street in Barangay 718. Ambon, 26, had just arrived in Manila to seek job opportunities when he was wrongly accused of theft while chasing an actual cellphone thief.
Fatal Mistake: Mob Attack and Tragic Death
Ambon was reportedly cornered by residents who believed he was the thief. He was beaten, stabbed, and tied up on the street despite being gravely injured.
He was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
His mother, Bonifacia Ambon, is devastated by her son’s tragic death, emphasizing that he was wrongly accused.
Barangay’s Claim and Police Investigation
While Ambon’s family insists he was an innocent victim, the barangay claimed that Ambon was the first to stab someone during the altercation. As a result, he was charged with trespassing and frustrated murder.
The MPD has interviewed witnesses, reviewed CCTV footage, and conducted an autopsy to clarify the circumstances of his death.
“This case will not go unsolved,” the MPD assured in a statement, pledging accountability for those responsible.
MPD Vows Justice and Prevention of Similar Crimes
MPD District Director Police Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay promised a thorough investigation and justice for Ambon.
“We assure the family of our continued commitment to bringing full closure to this case. The MPD is doing its best to prevent similar crimes and hold those responsible accountable,” Ibay stated.
The case has raised concerns over mob justice and mistaken identity, prompting calls for more responsible community actions and stricter law enforcement measures.
