MANILA, Philippines — The highly anticipated biographical film about the “King of Pop,” titled Michael, has officially cleared the Philippine regulatory hurdles. The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has granted the film a Parental Guidance (PG) rating, allowing it to reach a broad audience in local cinemas.
The decision comes as a relief to fans and distributors, as the board confirmed that the film will be shown in its “entirety,” with no scenes edited or deleted despite the singer’s complex and often controversial life story.
According to the MTRCB’s classification report, the PG rating was assigned because while the film contains themes of trauma, medicinal drug use, and brief instances of violence, these elements are handled with “artistic restraint” and are essential to the biographical narrative.
“The film provides a comprehensive look at the life of a global icon. While it does not shy away from the challenges he faced, the presentation is suitable for a general audience, provided that younger viewers are accompanied by a parent or guardian,” the board stated.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson—Michael’s real-life nephew—the biopic spans the singer’s four-decade career. Key highlights include:
- The Motown Era: His rise to stardom with the Jackson 5.
- The Making of ‘Thriller’: Behind-the-scenes recreations of his most iconic music videos and the “Moonwalk.”
- Personal Struggles: The film reportedly addresses his changing appearance, his battle with prescription medication, and the intense media scrutiny that followed him until his death in 2009.
Early buzz from private screenings suggests that Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal is “uncannily accurate,” capturing not just the dance moves but the soft-spoken vulnerability of his uncle. The production used authentic locations, including the Neverland Ranch, to maintain historical accuracy.
The PG rating is expected to significantly boost the film’s box office performance in the Philippines, where Michael Jackson remains one of the most beloved international artists. Major cinema chains like SM Cinema and Ayala Malls Cinemas have already opened pre-selling for tickets, with “block screenings” being organized by various fan clubs across the country.
Michael is set to premiere in Philippine theaters on April 29, 2026, coinciding with a global release strategy aimed at making it the biggest musical biopic in history.
