Nadine Lustre and Justin De Dios of P-pop group SB19 have become vocal advocates for the Masungi Georeserve, which is currently facing threats of commercial encroachment and a potential contract cancellation by the government. The Masungi Georeserve, located in Tanay, Rizal, is renowned for its natural beauty and significant biodiversity, managed by the Masungi Georeserve Foundation Inc. (MGFI) and supported by Blue Star Construction & Development Corporation.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has moved to rescind its 2017 memorandum of agreement with Masungi, citing the agreement as invalid from the start. This agreement, signed under former Secretary Gina Lopez, enabled the foundation to manage a vast tract of land for conservation purposes, which the DENR now challenges.

Reacting to the DENR’s actions, Nadine Lustre, an honorary Masungi park ranger since March 2023, labeled the cancellation threat a “travesty of justice.” She emphasized that rescinding the contract would favor land grabbers and others opposed to environmental conservation. Lustre has called for active involvement to protect and sustain Masungi’s conservation efforts.

Similarly, Justin De Dios encouraged the youth to support Masungi, highlighting its importance not only as a natural treasure but also as a symbol of youth power in conservation. “Masungi is not only a testament to the beauty of nature but also the power of youth. By supporting it, we are helping to protect this amazing landscape and, of course, its biodiversity,” he stated.

In a bold move, the MGFI invited DENR Secretary Toni Yulo-Loyzaga to inspect the site personally and verify the alleged irregularities, including claims of unauthorized construction like a hotel and swimming pool within the protected area. MGFI has challenged the accuracy of these allegations and suggested that if they prove unfounded, the secretary should consider resigning.

The controversy has garnered significant public attention, culminating in a solidarity event organized by MGFI, which drew over 500 supporters, including notable figures like Michael V., Joey Ayala, Noel Cabangon, Paolo Sandejas, and Keiko Necesario, who performed in support of Masungi.

The struggle over Masungi Georeserve highlights the ongoing conflict between development pressures and environmental conservation in the Philippines, drawing in public figures to bolster the cause of preserving critical natural habitats.
