MANILA – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has filed a complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, accusing her of inciting to sedition and grave threats over a statement in which she allegedly ordered a “kill directive” against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta, and Speaker Martin Romualdez.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed on Wednesday that the complaint has been submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for evaluation and possible preliminary investigation.

“We have submitted this to the DOJ, and they will weigh the evidence to determine the next steps,” Santiago said.

Duterte’s Response: “As Expected”

When asked for a response, Duterte simply stated: “As expected.”

She had previously denied making assassination threats, insisting her words were taken out of context and were meant to highlight security threats against her.

Controversial Statement & Legal Fallout

The case stems from a 2024 online press briefing, where Duterte was recorded saying she had instructed someone to kill Marcos and others if she were to be assassinated.

“I told that person, if I get killed, kill BBM, Liza Araneta, and Martin Romualdez,” Duterte allegedly stated.

Her remarks are also one of the seven Articles of Impeachment filed against her in Congress.

NBI & DOJ Review

The DOJ’s National Prosecution Service (NPS) will determine if the evidence is sufficient to move forward with the case. Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon said the matter is still under review.

Meanwhile, Santiago emphasized that the NBI’s actions were independent and apolitical, stating, “No one ordered or dictated this investigation; it is purely based on evidence.”

With the impeachment case and criminal complaints piling up, Duterte faces one of the biggest political and legal battles of her career.
