The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Friday that the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano has caused nearly P1.5 million in agricultural damage in Western Visayas.

Key Details:

  • Agricultural Damage: The NDRRMC estimated the agricultural damage at P1,491,206.
  • Affected Population: The volcanic activity has impacted 2,479 people or 682 families in Western and Central Visayas. Of these, 1,400 individuals (361 families) are in eight evacuation centers, while 364 people (62 families) are staying elsewhere.
  • Stranded Passengers: A total of 1,501 passengers were stranded at seaports in Western Visayas.

Current Status:

  • Flight Resumption: All 20 domestic and one international flight that were canceled have now resumed.
  • State of Calamity: La Castellana in Negros Occidental and Canlaon in Negros Oriental have declared a state of calamity.
  • Provided Assistance: The NDRRMC has provided assistance worth P2,740,970 to the affected victims.

Volcanic Activity:

  • Phreatic Eruption: On June 3, Kanlaon Volcano had a phreatic eruption, emitting plumes that reached 5,000 meters. The volcano is currently at Alert Level 2, indicating increased unrest.
  • Lahar Deposits: Gray cohesive mud, plant debris, and gravel have been deposited by lahar along four waterways in La Castellana and Canlaon.

Residents and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring safety and providing necessary aid to those affected by the volcanic activity.
