An Ambitious Leap in Design
My Eyes Are Up Here
Sightful, a tech company, has taken a bold step into the future by releasing the Spacetop G1, a laptop with no traditional screen. Instead, it pairs with augmented reality glasses to deliver its visual elements, revolutionizing the conventional clamshell laptop design.
As reported by Laptop Mag, Sightful collaborated with AR glasses manufacturer XReal to create a pair of glasses that project the laptop’s display. A sleek 90-second advertisement showcases users lounging by the pool, using the device through chunky, blacked-out glasses that resemble Ray-Bans. These glasses can be stored in a cutout within the device’s bottom half, where a screen would typically be.
Tethered Glasses and Practical Considerations
The Spacetop G1 runs on a custom version of Android, distancing itself from the typical Windows or Mac ecosystem. This makes it more akin to a tablet or smartphone than a conventional laptop. However, whether this innovative gadget will gain mainstream acceptance is uncertain. The technology is still emerging, and the Spacetop G1’s $1,900 price tag might deter all but the most adventurous early adopters.
Is It Really Augmented Reality?
While XReal’s glasses are praised for their lightweight design, they don’t significantly interact with the real world. They primarily display application windows that appear to hover in front of the user, which is closer to a virtual reality experience when paired with physical blinders or electrochromic dimming.
“The concept of an AR laptop is certainly an interesting idea, but I foresee issues in its implementation, especially as it is/if it is Android-based,” remarked Emily Wang, co-founder of VITURE mixed reality glasses, in an interview with Laptop Mag. She also questioned the laptop’s high price, noting that users could get more flexibility by pairing AR glasses with a regular MacBook or Windows device for the same cost.
A Glimpse into the Future
While the Spacetop G1 might not become an immediate bestseller, it represents a fascinating attempt to integrate an all-in-one AR experience. Companies like Sightful still need to prove the viability of such technology and convince consumers that a keyboard paired with AR glasses is the future of portable productivity.
