The recent online uproar concerning the sale of unclaimed balikbayan boxes has highlighted a deep-seated issue affecting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families. A viral video by content creator Alexis Vines, showcasing the unboxing of a purchased balikbayan box for P5,500, ignited this controversy. The box, filled with personal items like a pillow, blanket, perfume, and lotion, represented more than just material goods – it symbolized the emotional connection between OFWs and their loved ones in the Philippines.

The intended recipient of this particular box, sent by their OFW mother, could not afford the claiming and processing fees, leaving the box unclaimed. Alexis Vines, empathizing with the owner, offered to return the items if desired. This incident opened a floodgate of similar stories. Many OFWs and their families expressed their distress over unclaimed boxes, with contents often worth significant amounts and intended for special occasions like weddings.

For instance, “Ela,” an OFW from Japan, sent a box with goods worth over P100,000, which never reached her family. Despite her attempts to contact the courier, she faced vague responses about shipment delays. The emotional and financial strain of these lost connections resonates deeply among the OFW community, as they rely on these boxes to maintain bonds with their families across the seas.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has announced an investigation into the online sale of these boxes. They clarified that agreements exist between senders, shippers, and forwarders regarding the disposal of unclaimed boxes. Some forwarding companies admit to selling unclaimed boxes after a year in storage. However, this practice has raised legal questions, with advice for pursuing action against unaccredited freight forwarders.

The situation has sparked a widespread call for clarity and action, emphasizing the need for a list of accredited consolidators and forwarding companies, which the BOC plans to release in the first three months of 2024. This move aims to guide Filipinos in entrusting their balikbayan boxes, ensuring they reach their intended destinations and maintain the precious familial bonds that these boxes represent.
