Over 300 individuals were evacuated in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental, after the Layawan River overflowed due to continuous rains, causing floodwaters to enter homes in Barangay Villaflor and nearby areas.
Evacuation and Suspension of Classes
Residents from affected barangays have sought refuge in evacuation centers set up by local authorities. In response to the worsening conditions, classes at all levels in both public and private schools were suspended on Friday, November 29, 2024.
Persistent Rainfall from the Mountains
Oroquieta City Mayor Lemuel Acosta noted that intermittent rains and strong winds originating from the mountainous areas likely caused the river to overflow.
“It started raining last night then stopped for a while and continued again, with heavy rain and strong winds coming from the mountains,” Mayor Acosta said.
Provincial Monitoring and Advisory
Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal has directed the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) to closely monitor the situation and provide updates. The local government has also urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with preemptive evacuation orders if issued.
Stay Safe
Residents are encouraged to prioritize safety, monitor local advisories, and report emergencies to authorities.
