Pangil, one of the largest saltwater crocodiles in the Philippines, has passed away due to cancer, the Davao Crocodile Park and Zoo announced on Thursday.
The beloved 18-foot reptile died on January 25 from complications caused by metastatic squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer that had spread throughout its body, leading to multi-systemic organ failure despite medical intervention.
A Symbol of Strength and Biodiversity
For years, Pangil was the main attraction at the Davao Crocodile Park, serving as a symbol of strength and biodiversity in the country.
“He was not just an attraction at Davao Crocodile Park & Zoo; he was a treasured icon, inspiring countless visitors to appreciate the beauty and importance of wildlife,” the park management stated.
Pangil took the title of the largest crocodile in captivity in the Philippines following the death of Lolong in 2013.
Call for Wildlife Protection
As the park mourns its beloved crocodile, it urged the public to continue supporting wildlife conservation efforts.
“Let us honor his memory by continuing to protect and respect the wildlife that enriches our lives,” the management added.
Pangil’s legacy will live on as a reminder of the importance of wildlife preservation and the rich biodiversity of the Philippines.
